Carol Schram: Sizing up Western Conference opponents in the possible Canadian Division There's plenty of talk about the possibility of a Canadian Division when the NHL starts its new season. Here's a look at how the Canucks stack up against their Western Conference Canadian rivals in Calgary, Edmonton and Winnipeg.

Thanks Carol!

Great to have your entertaining & insightful commentary, particularly in the “offseason”! How crazy that November is “offseason” this year!

That's taking that Pearson is leaving and Edler off too, right? Then they need cap room for Demko too. Plus to hold off on new term contracts to allow for BB's $7+M raise. So flat cap dictates ELC's of high talent prospects to fill the roster.

Demko likely lands around 3.5-4m for 3 or 4 years like what Marky got. BB is fine, LE, Roussell, and Beagle all expire when he needs a raise. OJ hopefully makes Edler redundant, if not Edler becomes the last player signed to a "This is what we can afford for you to remain a Canuck" contract. Pearson may re-sign, but if we are not a playoff team by TDL he is likely gone for a 2nd +. By the 21-22 season, we likely have Podz, Lind, Hogger ready for NHL games and, like all teams, will be relying on ELC's to be NHL ready.

Hodz is 5 foot 9.... not even a man, the odds of him ever playing 100 games in the NHL are against him, despite his skill, he's basically Hunter Shinkuruk 2.0.

Podz is going to be top 6 this season, top line in 21/21.

I hope Demko plays well enough to garner that raise and I agree with Edler.

Solid post.

Shinkaruk was small and weak. hog is short and strong. Very poor comparison. They don’t even play a similar style

There are a lot of 5'9" players in the league, Gaudreau, Granlund are two of the many smaller players in the league that have been very good.

Hodz is even shorter then shink, not even a halfling. Palmu is a better comparison.

The list of 5 nine players who didn't make the show is far, far longer then the super short list of ineffective playoff busts who make it.

Thanks Carol! Canadian division will be tough for us if it goes down. Will be a great competitive division though!

You’re on the wrong side of this, average height/size of forwards has gone down the last 5 years steadily as the game becomes more about speed/skill and transition. Point? Gallager? Gaudreau? Arvidsson?the list grows every year.

Canucks historically are pretty bad against most Canadian opponents, but it will certainly make game nights way more interesting to play so many rivalry games

The average is still over 6 feet, 5 foot 9 is tiny, only the best of the best little half pint players make it.

How many don't? Most of them, too pencil hodz into the lineup at this stage is very pre mature.
ECHL all star, yes. Euro star on the big ice, yes. Top line wine in the NHL, no.

Also should help us improve with less bottom feeders to play against. Better competition will help growth.

So is the list of 6'3" players. Is there a point here?

The stereotypical player size is in the past. It takes time to evolve.

Hogz listed at 192 pounds and agile. Plays against men already. I dont see a problem because he's short either.
